Minnesota Football Preview 2023
Golden Gophers Aim for Bounce-Back Season
Offense Looks to Regain Form
After a disappointing 2022 campaign, the Minnesota Golden Gophers are eager to bounce back in 2023. The offense, which struggled mightily last season, will be a key focus for improvement.
Quarterback Tanner Morgan returns for his fifth season as a starter. The experienced signal-caller will need to improve his accuracy and decision-making to lead a more efficient offense.
Running back Mohamed Ibrahim is also back for another year. The two-time 1,000-yard rusher will be the focal point of the Gophers' running game.
Defense Remains a Strength
While the offense has some question marks, the defense is expected to be a strength for Minnesota in 2023. The Gophers return eight starters from a unit that allowed just 20.9 points per game last season.
Linebacker Mariano Sori-Marin is a key cog in the defense. The All-American candidate led the team with 104 tackles in 2022.
Defensive end Thomas Rush is another player to watch. The senior has recorded 24.5 sacks in his career and is a threat to opposing quarterbacks.
Expectations and Schedule
The Golden Gophers are looking to improve on their 8-4 record from last season. With a favorable schedule, they have the potential to compete for a bowl game berth.
Minnesota opens the season on September 2nd against New Mexico State. They have a challenging non-conference schedule that includes games against Colorado, Texas A&M, and Purdue.
The Gophers' Big Ten slate includes games against Ohio State, Michigan, and Iowa. They will need to perform well in these key matchups to contend for a bowl berth.
