Residents of five islands in the northern Jaffna district of Sri Lanka are set to benefit from an expansion of the ferry service between India and Sri Lanka, which will see the number of weekly sailings increase to four from two, according to authorities from both nations.
The announcement was made at the signing ceremony in New Delhi of a memorandum of understanding between the Indian and Sri Lankan governments to enhance bilateral maritime cooperation. India’s Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar, stated that the move signifies the importance of robust maritime connectivity between the countries and said maritime connectivity was the lifeline for economies in the Indian Ocean region.
