0-5: Weir leads the scoring with a brace in overwhelming opening league win

Rangers open their league campaign with emphatic win over Motherwell

Rangers began their Scottish Premiership title defense with a convincing 5-0 victory over Motherwell at Ibrox on Saturday.

An early goal from Malik Tillman set the tone for the afternoon, before James Tavernier doubled the lead from the penalty spot following a foul on Rabbi Matondo.

New signing Antonio Colak then made it 3-0 before half-time, finishing off a flowing move involving Scott Wright and Matondo.

Weir and Matondo add gloss to the scoreline

Rangers continued to dominate after the break and Ryan Kent laid on a fourth for Scott Arfield with a superb cross from the left.

Substitute Tom Lawrence then teed up Fashion Sakala to complete the scoring late on, continuing his impressive start to life at Ibrox.

Despite the scoreline, Motherwell had their moments, with Kevin van Veen hitting the post in the first half.

However, Rangers were simply too strong on the day and will be delighted to have begun their title defense in such emphatic fashion.
